Somaliland pins hopes of recognition on democratic credentials

Somaliland’s upcoming presidential elections, originally scheduled for November 2022, have been postponed until July 2023.

The announcement has been met with opposition from some groups who argue that the delay is undemocratic.

Somaliland’s been trying to win international recognition ever since it declared its independence from Somalia in 1991. It hopes its democratic credentials will help distinguish it from the nation it’s still technically part of. But Somaliland’s elections haven’t been smooth sailing.
