Somalia will have vice president for the first time in history thanks to majority of political stakeholders signed agreement inked early Sunday.
According to a communique issued after 4 days talks between the leaders in Mogadishu, the leadrrs of federal and regional governments have sealed an agreement restructuring the leadership system of the country.
The leaders of Jubbaland, Galmudug, Hirshabelle, Southwest states and Banaadir regions had held the talks with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamze Abdi Barre in Mogadishu save for save for Puntland state leader, Said Abdullahi Deni who boycoated the conference.
The meeting which chaired by President Mohamud was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister Salah Ahmed Jama,
Minister for Interior, Federal and Reconciliation Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, who read the communique hailed the agreement as “one step forward.”
The leaders agreed the premiership to be abolished and the introduction of a presidential system, with the president and vice president of the country elected directly on a single ticket.
The leaders also agreed that the country to hold universal suffrage and to drop the decades old clan based power sharing system.
The agreement signed by the leaders articulates that the country hold one-person-one-vote elections once every five years.
The leaders also agreed that a 15-member national election and border committee will be formed to manage all local, regional and federal elections.
According to the agreement the local council elections will be the first to take place on June 30 of next year as it will be followed that year by regional parliamentary and regional leadership elections on November 30.
