Somali forces have arrested an al-Shabaab operative in security operations in southern Somalia.

According to the state-owned media, the country’s elite forces killed five al-Shabaab fighters in operations which took place in villages under Lower Jubba region.

The operations comes hours after Somali National Army (SNA)  killed 30 al-Shabab fighters and injured several others in heavy fighting between the two sides in southern Somalia.

SNA Infantry Commander Mohamed Tahlil Bihi told the Somali News Agency that the army backed by pro-government militia, Ma’awisley, repulsed the militants during the operation.

“The terrorists tried to attack the bases owned by the joint forces in the region, but the forces responded swiftly. Our forces are still pursuing them,” Bihi said.
