Kenyan security forces have claimed to have foiled an al-Shabaab attack near the country’s border with Somalia.

In a statement, the police said the forces seized weapons and medical kits meant to use for the execution of a deadly terror attack in Garissa County.

“A security team seized six AK47 rifles, two Rocket Propelled Grenades, two grenades and other items during an operation on Monday in Garissa County,” police spokesperson Resila Onyango said.

According to Onyango, police raided an al-Shabaab camp in the wake of reports that the group has been sending their members to Kenya over the past month to launch attacks.

“The victory is coming at a time when we are facing threats by the terrorists. The operation is ongoing,” Onyango said.

Al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda-linked group has been carrying out attacks in areas along Kenya’s border with Somalia since 2011 when the East African nation sent its troops to Somalia to fight al-Shabaab fighters.

Hundreds of Kenyans were killed in deadly attacks that took place in Mandera, Garissa, Wajir, Lamu, Mombasa and Nairobi.

The group also staged deadly attacks on military bases manned by Kenyan forces working under African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).
